Some patients have large jaw discrepancies. These jaw discrepancies can be corrected with “Orthognathic jaw surgery”.
This term is used when jaws are realigned by an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon. This type of facial surgery is commonly undertaken in combination with an Orthodontist. The Orthodontist commonly corrects any crowding, spacing or malalignment of the teeth in each individual jaw but coordinates how these teeth can be made fit together into an ideal alignment and appearance after jaw surgery. This Orthodontic Treatment may take between nine to eighteen months prior to jaw surgery and on average takes six months after jaw surgery.
